When Christians are dominated by the world it’s a real tragedy. For this reason God has given Christians a direct command: “Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you". 1 John 2:15 NLT.
The earth or the human race are just two among a number of things this word world (kosmos, G2889) can mean. It all depends on the context. More often than not, however, it speaks of the “world system” or “world order, most of the 188 times it appears in Scripture. It speaks of the mind-sets, moral values, drives, gratifications, preferences, beliefs, ambitions, reasons, and exploits of society. A completely man- oriented system, it’s pretty vibrant in the humanistic and relativistic culture of the day.
While Jesus’ prayer was, “Not my will but thine be done”; man’s demand is, “Not thy will, but mine be done.” People today, think as the world thinks. Their opinions are influenced by their favorite media and the world and its changing trends have power over how they look.
All elements of people’s lives today are dominated by the world. The trendy phrase, “I am my own person,” is not only bogus, but stupid because the world dominates every person. Following the trends is an example of this domination. Many people follow trends of dress, cosmetics, hair style, morality, and numerous other things. A majority of people think that these trends are isolated, non-related and devoid of any meaning. In reality, they are far from being isolated because they are all part and parcel of a basic way of life called worldliness.
Women wearing pants, card playing, and going to the movies are what legalism teaches as the do’s and don’ts of worldliness, but worldliness is actually what we believe, not what we do. While external behavior is an expression of worldliness, it all originates from a mind-set, viewpoint and way of thinking.
Everyone, including Christians are dominated by the world in one way or another, simply by virtue of being human and as a result, sinful. But all is not hopeless, because triumph over such domination is possible through the God the Holy Spirit.
Review and Meditation: “For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith” 1 John 5:4 NLT. In view of the implication of the word world in 1 John 5:4, what is the Christian promised?
