How often is attention given to 'every word' when reading or listening to Scripture? Think of how impacting it would be to have an indepth understanding of each word. It would open up a new perspective  and make the word of God most rewarding. Note what Jesus said to Satan in response to being tempted in the wilderness:
"It is written, 'MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE, BUT ON EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.'" Matt.4:4

Who worte it? God did. God-breathed words. The Scriptures are the very words of God Himself and if there is anyone we should listen to attentively, its God.

Picture it in your mind. After 40 days without a morsal to eat or drink  Jesus was not only hungry but extremely weak as well. Even though He could have, He made a conscious decision not to use his divine power to satisfy his natural desire for food. In His situation, food, hunger, and eating are not bad, its just that the timing was wrong. Jesus was in the wilderness for one purpose only - to fast, not to eat. The fast was absolutely necessary for Him to be able to fully experience humanity. Using his divine power to change the stones to bread would have defeated His purpose. We too may be tempted to satisfy  perfectly normal desires in a wrong way or at the wrong time. We must remember that while our desires are normal and good, God wants us to satisfy them in the right way and at the right time.

Jesus was able to resist all of the devil's temptations because His focus was on 'every word.'  He had an indepth knowledge of Scripture and used it to His advantage by obeying it. Eph. 6:17 speaks of God's Word as a sword to be used in spiritual combat. While knowing Bible verses is an important step in helping us resist the devil's attacks, we have an even greater advantage when we know the deeper meaning of 'every word.'  We see from the text that Satan had memorized Scripture as well, but he failed to obey it. Could it be that he did not have the depth of understanding about every word as  Jesus had? Knowing, understanding  and obeying the Bible helps us follow God's desires rather than the devil's.  It is my prayer that you will be refreshed as you meditate on God's holy Word.
