Foolish talking is a trait of false love (Eph. 5:4). It’s a term that is much more subtle and common than filthiness. While filthiness is something a lot of people would never blatantly speak out or live out, they would and do live out foolish talking.
Translated morologia (G3473), foolish talking is found only here in the NT. The Greek moros (G3474) from which we get our English word moron means “silly, stupid, foolish,” and logia comes from log, which means “word or discourse.” The thought expressed here, then, is that of talking about things that are foolish and senseless. Paul expresses this same thought again as he writes a pastor,: “But avoid foolish [moros] questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain” (Tit. 3:9) For any pastor this is wise counsel. Even Solomon says, “The tongue of the wise makes knowledge appealing, but the mouth of a fool belches out foolishness. ” (Prov. 15:2).
It is pointless talking with the unsaved person who only talks nonsense about the stupidity of man. But we must also understand it is just as pointless talking with a Christian who does the same thing. The reality is, we live in a time when there is a lot of talk about nothing! “Talk shows” today, both secular and Christian are crammed with pointless discussion. We hear the opinions of many, but absolutes contained in God’s Word is never offered or even sought after. In reality, “a forum for opinion,” rather a statement of truth is all that is desired. That was precisely what Paul stated to the Corinthians Christians. He said,“I arrived at this Greek forum not to debate the latest philosophy, but to preach the truth of the Gospel” (1 Cor. 2:1-5).
Sadly, we cannot deny the volumes of “moronic speech” spewed out from many pulpits today. From psychological gibberish to “feel-good” sermonettes, truth is evidently none-existent. The Christian should never waste his or her time wherever the Word of God is not listened to. There is nothing more to say if people refuse the truth. Our time is precious because it's also God's time and as such, it should be invested on the truth rather than wasted on talking foolishness.
Review and Meditation: In Reading 2 Tim. 2:15-17, take note of what the pastor should and should not do as well as the consequences for failing to do what should be done.
