For the Christian the Greek pistos (G4103), pronounced pis’-tos is an important adjective not only because of placed faith in Christ, but because he is now one who is faithful, trustworthy, consistent, constant, and reliable. Faith is not the only thing God demands; He also demands loyalty.

Christianity today has gotten a black eye because of the lack of faithfulness in many areas. Faithfulness to the Word of God, the service for God and the house of God. A closer look is needed to determine whether our profession is actually backed up by genuine possession. The real saint or true believer, will stay faithful because genuine faith is evidenced by practice. It must be clearly understood that this is in no way an implication that works is a factor in salvation or that salvation is sustained by works as some teach today. What it does mean is that, how we actually live our lives does provide proof that we are truly born again. Proof of profession is the point James makes in his epistle.

Faithfulness is an essential element of Christian living. That is why Paul said in his letter to the Corinthians Christians, “It is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful” (1 Cor. 4:2). What is a Steward? A steward was an administrator of household management. Without a doubt such a person would good managing money, be well organized, and have business know-how. But while all of those qualities are good. What mattered most in a steward was that he was faithful, trustworthy, and reliable. A steward would be worthless to his superior if he did not possess these three disciplines.

This is a picture of the genuine child of God. The application here is clearly directed to every Christian, even though the context of the verse speaks specifically of “full-time ministers,” like Paul and his co-workers. All Christians are all stewards of the truth. Not only is it “the saints which are at Ephesus” that are addressed Eph.1:1, but also “the faithful in Christ Jesus.” The point was also made in the Parable of the Talents (Matt. 25:14-30), where the Lord commended the faithful stewards by saying to them “Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord” (Matt. 25:21, Matt. 25:23). To be faithful in Christian living should be our desire.
