“And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption” Eph. 4:30.

How many times have read this verse and not given a serious thought about what the word grieve really mean. Well, the word lupeō (G3076) means “to sadden, bring pain, afflict with sorrow.” We find this word on two occurrences describing the sorrowful feelings of the disciples after Jesus told them that one of them would betray him ( Matt. 26:22 ; Mark 14:19). After Jesus asked Peter for the third if he loved Him with caring affection he experienced deep grief. (John 21:17). The Apostle Paul was unapologetic about the sorrow he cause the Corinthian believers when he wrote them earlier about their behavior ( 2 Cor. 7:8-9). In fact, they repented because what he said was true.

The occurrence of lupeō, in Eph. 4:30 is the most significant of all. A profound statement indeed! It’s the actual reference to the time when the prophet Isaiah states that the Israelites “rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit” (Isa. 63:9-11). Here we have a powerful reminder of the practical effect the doctrine of the indwelling Holy Spirit has.

Even though God is saddened by all sin, not only the ones is listed by Paul in Eph. 4:31 These sins are particularly painful to the Holy Spirit. Why? Because they are for the most part contradictory to the Holy Spirit-indwelt life. Nothing is more contradictory in the Holy Spirit-indwelt life than bitterness, lying, unrighteous anger, corrupt communication and steal[ing] among the other the sins stated.

Since we are sealed in anticipation of going home to be with the Lord, we are to behave like sealed saints now by not grieving the Holy Spirit by sinning.

Review and Meditation: What did Jesus say would turn the disciple’s sorrow into joy according to John 16:17-33? , What causes sorrow according to 1 Thess. 4:13-18? What occurrence will turn it into joy?
