“ She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins Matt. 1:21."

Jesus (Iesous, G2424) means Savior and its the human name given by God to our Lord, because God wanted there to be no doubt about who this child would be and what He would accomplish,“for he will save his people from their sins Matt. 1:21."

Since His deity and humanity has constantly been battlefields, the person of Jesus has had countless assaults throughout the ages. The “historical Jesus” has been rejected by many cults and heretics numbering in the hundreds even to this very day.

The name Jesus by itself is stated more than 600 times in the NT. “Jesus Christ” is mentioned even many more times. God gave Joseph and Mary specific instructions about naming their baby boy (Matt.1:21; Luke 1:31).

What is so unique about this word Iesous is that both Greek and Latin corresponds to the Hebrew “Jeshua” (H3091) which is the same as “Joshua” meaning “the Lord is salvation.”
The reason why Jesus is assaulted and targeted for destruction is because leaving Jesus alone means that men must deny themselves, their religion, their works, and trust Jesus alone for salvation. Something they absolutely refuse to do.

What’s in the name of Jesus? A powerful call to repentance Acts 2:38, the power to heal sickness Acts 3:6, the power to cast out demons Acts 16:18, the power to save the lost 1 Cor.1:2. Just like it was in His day when men sought to destroy Him and as it is in our day as they reject Him, we anticipate the coming a day when, “that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth” (Phil. 2:10).

Review and Meditation: Jesus’ deity is distinctively offered in John’s gospel. His name is stated over 250 times with the most frequency in chapter 11. How many times does it appear? What is the magnificent event described in the same chapter?
